The Brooklyn Nets officially open their season at Barclays Center on November 1 versus their cross-city rivals the New York Knicks, but basketball is not the only thing taking center stage at this new arena. JAY Z, Barbra Streisand, Lady Gaga, Bob Dylan, and many other stars will perform during the inaugural season of this spectacular facility, which seats up to 19,000 fans for sporting events and concerts.
And literally beneath all the excitement in Brooklyn is where you’ll find Langan, the geotechnical consultant for Barclays Center, a core component of the Atlantic Yards, a bold redevelopment plan by Forest City Ratner that will bring cultural and economic vitality to the local community.
Langan performed a site-specific seismic analysis that resulted in a more favorable seismic design category for Barclays Center. Based on our seismic recommendations, the seismic detailing and connections, as well as foundation ties, were revised, ultimately saving the client millions of dollars. Langan also provided the special inspections for both the extensive foundation system and complicated support of excavation on this large urban site.
“At Langan we always strive to provide engineering solutions that leverage our technical knowledge and local experience with challenging sub-surface conditions, which in this case resulted in significant schedule and cost savings for Forest City Ratner,” said Andy Ciancia, Senior Principal, Langan. “We are thrilled to support this incredibly important project that will transform the Atlantic Center neighborhood of Brooklyn, one of the many New York Metro areas that we consider our backyard.”
